Material fundamentals

Engineering-grade ABS with a practical balance of performance and cost

ABS, or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, is a standard engineering plastic favored for its impact resistance, rigidity, and cost-effectiveness. It is also easy to machine and supports a range of secondary finishing options.

Design focus

For injection molded ABS, consistent wall thickness helps prevent sink marks. For CNC ABS, complex internal features can often be produced without the upfront tooling investment.

Typical ABS material properties

Reference values
Property Typical value Design relevance
Density ~1.04 g/cm³ Lightweight component design
Tensile strength 40–45 MPa Structural load planning
HDT 90–100°C Thermal operating limits
Izod impact strength 200–300 J/m Impact and drop resistance
Molding shrinkage 0.4%–0.7% Mold and dimension planning
Typical wall thickness 1.5–3.0 mm Molding and part consistency

Process selection

Choose the right ABS route for your volume and geometry

Project requirements determine whether CNC machining or injection molding is the more efficient path. Use the comparison below as a starting point for your manufacturing discussion.

Best for prototypes and low volume

Iterate quickly without tooling costs

CNC machined ABS is ideal for functional prototypes, low-volume production, and parts with complex internal features that are difficult to mold. It supports immediate design iteration without the cost of tooling.

Consider CNC when you need

  • • Fast design changes
  • • Complex internal geometry
  • • Prototype or low-volume quantities
  • • No initial mold investment

Production capabilities

From multi-axis machining to finished enclosures

Our contract manufacturing workflow supports engineering plastics, metals, complex assemblies, and ready-to-use sheet metal components.
